Global Tinnitus Prevalence, By the Numbers

Tinnitus prevalence estimates range widely depending on how a study defines it, who it surveys, and which country it's conducted in — see genetics and tinnitus for how family history factors into individual risk separately from these population-level numbers. Rather than pick one number, it's more useful to see the range and understand why it moves around as much as it does.

The headline numbers

  • Pooled worldwide: a 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis in JAMA Neurology, drawing on 83 prevalence studies published between 1972 and 2021, put the prevalence of any tinnitus among adults at 14.4% (95% CI 12.6–16.5%) — more than 740 million adults, of whom more than 120 million experience it as a major problem. Severe tinnitus came out at 2.3%, chronic tinnitus at 9.8%, and diagnosed tinnitus at 3.4%.
  • United States: NIDCD estimates roughly one in ten US adults has experienced tinnitus lasting at least five minutes in the past year — close to 24 million people.
  • Netherlands: an analysis of Dutch general practice records put overall tinnitus prevalence at around 15%, with rates trending upward as more patients seek care for it.
  • UK Biobank cohort: a 2025 machine-learning analysis found just over a fifth of participants reported tinnitus, with roughly a quarter of those describing it as moderately or severely distressing — notably higher than the US and Dutch figures, likely reflecting differences in how the question was asked and who was surveyed.

Why the numbers don't match up

A few real methodological differences explain most of the spread between studies:

  • Definition matters enormously. "Have you ever noticed ringing in your ears" catches a much larger group than "tinnitus lasting 5+ minutes in the past year," which itself is broader than "clinically significant, distressing tinnitus."
  • Age of the sample. Since tinnitus prevalence rises sharply with age, a study skewed toward an older population will report a higher rate than one skewed younger, independent of any real difference in underlying rates.
  • Self-report vs. clinical assessment. Population surveys rely on people accurately recalling and reporting their own symptoms; clinic-based or biobank data can differ based on who chooses to participate.

Consistent patterns across studies, despite the differences in absolute numbers

A few findings show up reliably across nearly every dataset, which is a stronger signal than any single prevalence figure:

  • Tinnitus increases with age, rising noticeably after 40 and generally peaking in the 65–79 range before declining somewhat in the oldest groups.
  • Women report more distress; whether men report more tinnitus is contested. Large single cohorts, UK Biobank among them, find higher prevalence in men across most adult age ranges, a gap usually attributed to historically higher occupational and recreational noise exposure. The pooled meta-analysis found no significant difference by sex — 14.1% of men against 13.1% of women. This site listed the male excess as a consistent cross-study pattern until 2026-09-05; on the pooled evidence it is not one. The distress difference is the finding that does recur.
  • Prevalence appears to be trending upward over time in the datasets that track it longitudinally, plausibly linked to widespread personal audio device use and an aging population globally, though this is an association, not a proven single cause.

The bigger picture: hearing loss broadly

Since tinnitus and hearing loss are so closely linked, the WHO's global hearing loss figures are relevant context: over 1.5 billion people worldwide currently live with some degree of hearing loss, a number WHO projects could exceed 2.5 billion by 2050 as the global population ages. Tinnitus prevalence is expected to track that broader trend, even though its own global estimate is harder to pin down precisely.

The practical takeaway

If you have tinnitus, the exact percentage of the population that shares it matters less than this: across every study, in every country measured, tinnitus is common — common enough that "one in ten to one in five adults" is a reasonable rule of thumb almost anywhere in the world, not a rare or unusual experience.
