Acoustic Neuroma and One-Sided Tinnitus: When to Get Imaging

An acoustic neuroma — more precisely called a vestibular schwannoma — is one of the less common causes of tinnitus, but it's a specific reason doctors take new, one-sided tinnitus seriously rather than assuming it's routine noise-related tinnitus.

What it actually is

It's a benign (non-cancerous), slow-growing tumor that develops on the vestibulocochlear nerve — the nerve connecting the inner ear to the brain, responsible for both hearing and balance.
